Gender & Bathroom Considerations at Cairn in 2024

Posted On: Sunday, May 5, 2024

Dear Cairn Camps Families and Community,

We hope this finds you well and looking forward to the upcoming season together at camp. As we prepare for another successful camp season, we wanted to share with you an update regarding our approach to gendered bathrooms at camp.

At Cairn, led by our faith in God who loves everyone, we are committed to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for all campers, families, and staff members. We believe in creating spaces where everyone feels respected, valued, and comfortable being themselves.

As many of you may know, over the past few years we have begun to explore what degendering bathroom spaces at camp could look like during family camp programs and staff-only times.

After careful consideration and consultation with our community, we will have both gendered boys and girls bathrooms and all-gender bathrooms available during all summer camp, family camp, and retreat programs. Our main Lodge bathroom facilities will remain gendered, and we will be designating the Washhouse near the Haven as all-gender single-use bathrooms for staff and participants.

We recognize the importance of providing gender-inclusive facilities for those who do not identify within the traditional binary gender categories, and having the washhouse available will help meet that need for anyone who prefers or requires a gender-neutral or single-use bathroom and showering option.

We are grateful and proud to know that our camp community is overall strongly in support of creating gender inclusive spaces and programs. We believe that this solution aligns with these values while also respecting the current limitations of our infrastructure. We are actively exploring options for future upgrades and improvements that may allow for greater flexibility in this area in the future.

As always, we remain committed to providing a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment for everyone at Cairn Camps. If you have any questions or concerns about this or other steps we are taking towards gender inclusivity, please don't hesitate to reach out to us.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership as we work together to create meaningful camp experiences for all.

With thanks,
Michelle "Konk" Roberts, Executive Director
Robynne "Mapes" Howard, Camp Director
