Welcome to TRIUCHAN TAIRUS - Issue #11

November/December 2005

Welcome to our November/December Newsletter. At the end of each month, we put up a new online newsletter to keep you up to speed on all the “goings on” within our Glen Mhor Family. We welcome your contributions, emailed photographs, and updates.

Big News

Our annual Synod will took place from Tuesday October 18 th to Wednesday October 19 th at Canadian Forces Base in Trenton. The camping report was given and truly supported. We are so thankful for our Glen Mhor parents who attended to hear the news and to the members of this year’s Synod who handled the future of camping with such great care.

As we are sure you have heard, the Synod has made it’s decision to go with the Report of the Synod Camp Board on the future of camping. All 5 of our camping programmes (Glen Mhor, Iona, Dorothy Lake and our 2 Music Camps – Muskoka and Quinte) have been saved! Topaz and Zoic have been hired as the Executive Directors of all the camping programmes and Iona will be moving to the Baysville site. We could not be happier with all that has happened and are equally excited with the unanimous support of the Commissioners of this year’s Synod in October. Presbyterian Church Camping has been given an infusion of energy and support!

For a more detailed report on the plans for Synod Camping, please click here.

We are looking for a new name for the Baysville property (Glen Mhor and Iona will remain as the names of the two sites on the property). If you have any ideas, we’d love to hear them!

Look for a brand new colour brochure outlining all 5 of our Synod’s camping programmes in the near future!

What Camp is Like Without You

It’s pretty quiet at Glen Mhor these days. The leaves have all disappeared and, on Thursday and Friday of last week, we had our first snow storm. It was absolutely beautiful here – like a Christmas postcard. The snow melted but it has come back. Not sure when it will be here to stay but we are sure it will soon!

Topaz and Zoic have been keeping extremely busy. With the decision of the Synod to have all the camping programme join forces and to move the Iona programme to the Baysville site, there is plenty to do these days!!

Topaz and Zoic just met with some of the 2005 staff members of Camp Iona on Saturday. It was great to get together, to meet each other and to hear all the ideas from the Iona staff of how we can successfully move forward. They were eager to give us all their favourite memories, what is important to them about the programme and what makes Iona so unique and special. Our thanks to all those who attended and to those many university and college students who are away at school and who have emailed us with their thoughts. It has been incredibly helpful and we look forward to working with you!

Our thanks to Alison Cooper and Robert Blane of the Synod Camp Board who attended and lent their support.

We are also working on our new brochure, clearing the site for Iona here in Baysville, moving all the stuff over from the Iona site in Bala, prepping new staff and lit applications for 2006 and so much more!

What Are Our Staff Up To These Days?

Our Congratulations to Zilch who has just been hired by Cedar Glen YMCA. She is just beginning work and one of her first tasks is to create a leadership programme. We know she’ll be fantastic!!!

Our staff and LIT applications go online at the beginning of December. Resource applications are due in early January, Counsellor applications 2 weeks after that, and LIT applications in early March. All the details can be found on the application forms.

What About Our Campers?

Let us know what you are up to! If you have any exciting news to share with our camp community, email us at: topaz@ilovecamp.org and we’ll put it in our next newsletter. Don’t forget to include your age, what session(s) you attended, what cabin you were in and who your counsellors were. We also welcome any photos you can email to us!

Teen Week Reunion

Our annual Teen Week Reunion is planned for Saturday, December 17 th, from 1:00 to 5:00. All Teen Week Campers (#15) are welcome to attend.

It will be held at Leaside Presbyterian Church in Toronto. All our teen week campers should have received both an email and an invitation by snail mail. We look forward to seeing all of you there. Don’t forget your canned goods for the Food Drive and your permission slips (found on the back of your mailed invitation).

Mark the date on your calendars, Teen Campers, and get ready for the fun!!

Bowl-a-Thon

Our Camp Reunion and Bowl-a-Thon took place on Saturday, October 22 nd in Toronto at Thorncliffe Bowlerama in Leaside. Our thanks to all those campers, parents, lits and staff who attended and bowled for Glen Mhor. We raised over $1800 for future capital projects. Well done everybody!!

The Penny Project

Hey Campers, be on the lookout in your church for the Penny Project letter. Jersey sent out a mailing this month asking all Sunday School Superintendents and children to collect their pennies from now until the end of 2005. At the end of the year, we are asking each church to roll the pennies collected and send a cheque to Glen Mhor Camp. We’d also like to hear from you about how well your Sunday School did and would love to put a photograph of your group and the pennies you collected on the website! Good luck with collecting and thanks so much for helping to make Glen Mhor an even better place for our campers!

Our 75th!

As you know, we have been celebrating our 75 th anniversary this year and it has been great! Many celebrations have taken place. Our Dinner and Evening of Praise in May was a huge success with a terrific turnout and a super silent auction. Thanks so much to all those who came out to support Glen Mhor and who took part in all the festivities. A special thank you to all our staff who helped to set up, serve and take down. You were amazing!

Our 75 th Alumni Weekend has just wrapped up at camp and it was a blast! Many people from the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and this century took part! The highlight of the weekend was our campfire on Saturday night. Thanks to all of you for making it so memorable! If you are interested in a yearly event for alumni, please let us know and we’ll set it up for next September!

The Glen Mhor Outdoor Centre

The year 2006 will see the 7th year of our Outdoor Education Centre. In the spring, Glen Mhor will welcome school groups for 3 or 4 day programmes.
