SYNOD NEWS

To Our Glen Mhor Family,

As many of you now know, the Report of the Synod Special Committee on the Future of Camping Ministry within the Synod of Toronto-Kingston was deferred on the 19th of October at the 130th Synod in Don Mills. It is important to understand that it was not defeated but rather sent back to the Committee and to the Synod Camp Board, the Presbyteries and the sessions of our congregations. It will be revisited in October 2005.

There is a lot of work ahead of us but this is an exciting opportunity to dream, to plan and to work together to ensure the success of youth ministry in this Synod. We continue to welcome your letters, phone calls and emails expressing the importance of Christian camping to you and your ideas for the future.

The passion for Synod camping has certainly been re-ignited by this process and we look to use that momentum to move us forward to new and amazing journeys in the year ahead.

Glen Mhor heads into its 75th anniversary year with great anticipation. A formal dinner and evening of praise and worship has been planned for Saturday, May 14th at Trinity-York Mills Church in Toronto . An alumni weekend will take place at camp from the 16th to the 18th of September. Many additional celebrations and surprises are in the works for 2005! Our newly revamped website will have further updates of events and opportunities as the year continues.

More than ever, we need to provide God’s children with a place to grow ~ a place that is safe, where they can be themselves without criticism or stereotypes, where they do not need to be concerned about fashion, “fitting in”, or growing up far before it’s time, where they can escape for a while from the media and all that it targets as important for our teens and pre-teens, where they can be exposed to role models who follow Christ and His teachings, where they can feel loved and accepted and able to try new things without fear of failure or rejection, where they can play. For “this place” to be truly successful, it requires time; in addition to weekly attendance at church and church groups, we need to offer people a place to be immersed in this type of culture 24 hours a day.

More than ever, camping and the churches within our Synod need to join together in partnership. The Synod owns remarkable property and has access to amazing resources not only for children and teens but also for families, sessions, choirs, board of managers, and the list goes on. Together, with better communication and a stronger focus, we can all benefit from the amazing ministry that is Christian Camping. We look forward to the exciting possibilities that lie ahead and for all that God has in store for us.

Faithfully,

The Glen Mhor Committee and Directors

CAMP THESE DAYS

It is wonderful to be able to communicate with all of you more often during the year and to have you participate in the camp newsletter with your contributions.

Although the staff and campers are gone, Glen Mhor Camp is still a very busy place to be. We are happy to report that Ted, our maintenance man extraordinaire, has finished work on our two new bunkies and has just prepared our camper washroom floors for their makeover which will take place early next spring. Topaz and Zoic have been working on budgets and marketing and advertising for next season and Glen Mhor has already begun booking its season of church visits. The brochures for all of our congregations in the Toronto-Kingston Synod will be mailed in November and applications will be available in the next few weeks to future staff and Leaders in Training. Along with our camp board, we are working hard to ensure that our 75 th year is our best one yet!

In their spare time, Zoic and Topaz are both sitting on camping conference committees (the Ontario Camping Association Human Resources Committee and the Ontario Camping Leadership Workshop, respectively) to add their input and to ensure that Glen Mhor is up to date with all the latest in camping resources.

The spring and summer staff are busy with work and school and are already looking forward to next season.

As always, we would love to hear from you. We are currently accepting registrations for the 2005 season and would be happy to answer any of your questions. The sessions are filling quickly so please get your registrations in soon so that you will not be disappointed. We are already getting excited for next year!

BOWL-A-THON

There were strikes and spares, there was food and friends, there was singing and laughter, there was fundraising!

Yes, Glen Mhor’s 2 nd annual Bowl-A-Thon was a super hit this year!  Our thanks to all 120 people who came out to Reunion to visit friends, to relive their summer memories and to help raise funds for future capital projects.

We raised over $2800 for Glen Mhor Camp and had a great time doing it!

To Our Camp Board :  Special thanks to Karen Elliott and Heather Nelson for their help with prizes and to Paul Kocher for bowling up a storm and collecting pledges.

It was a great day and we can’t wait to do it again next year!
