GLEN MHOR CAMP SEPTEMBER NEWSLETTER
Welcome to our September Newsletter. At the end of each month, we will put up a new online newsletter to keep you up to speed on all the "goings on" within our Glen Mhor Family. We welcome your contributions, emailed photographs, and updates.
What Camp is like without you…
It's pretty quiet at Glen Mhor these days. The leaves have begun to change colour and it is really beautiful. But…the lodge is empty, no one is cooking in the kitchen, no one is splashing in the lake, no campfires are aglow, and the bell is silent. WE MISS YOU!
Perhaps Maverick is the loneliest of all. He is looking for lots of campers (and Aloe) to play with him. We think Webster is grateful for the peace and quiet and will probably use the time to rest up for next year! Topaz and Zoic have been keeping extremely busy. Although the summer is over, there is all kinds of work to do to get ready for next year. They have already sent out Bowl-a-Thon letters to all the campers, LITs and staff, they have redone the Outdoor Centre forms and information and contacted schools (with the help of Jersey), they have written letters and applications for the mission trip to Nicaragua next March and written their reports for the Camp Board and for Synod. They are even revamping the website as we speak. Staff and LIT applications for next year are next on their list!
What are our staff up to these days?
Most of our staff are back at school. A number of them have gone off to university for the first time. Several staff members have finished university: Taps (he just got a job working for Adventure Works in Ancaster), Zilch and Murmle (they are leaving to travel in Europe in October) and Twizz (she is working in youth ministry in the Church).
We are thrilled to announce that Ciaran just got her first pulpit! She is now the Associate Pastor at Bridgeport Church in Nova Scotia. We know she will be an amazing minster!
Plinko is back to playing in the praise and worship band at The Embassy Church in Waterloo and Palais is working on another school production (behind the scenes this time) at Queens. Fruz continues her work in Uganda with "Right to Play" and Kita is continuing her placement in Malawi.
And what about our campers?
Let us know what you are up to! If you have any exciting news to share with our camp community, email us at: topaz@glenmhorcamp.com and we'll put it in our next newsletter. Don't forget to include your age, what session(s) you attended, what cabin you were in and who your counsellors were. We also welcome any photos you can email to us!
BOWL-A-THON
Our Camp Reunion and Bowl-a-Thon takes place on Saturday, October 16th in Toronto at Thorncliffe Bowlerama in Leaside. We will meet at the lanes at 12:45 and the event runs from 1:00 to 4:00.
We simply cannot wait to see all of our campers and staff again! This will be a great time to have some fun, see your cabinmates and counsellors and raise some capital funds for Glen Mhor too!
TRIP TO NICARAGUA
As many of you know, we are planning to take some campers and staff to Nicaragua in March of 2005. The dates are tentatively booked from the 12th to the 19th. We are going with the aid of Presbyterian World Services and Development. All of our Teen Mission Week staff and campers will be sent an application package just as soon as our dates are confirmed with Head Office in Toronto. For anyone else wishing to apply, the application package will be online after the dates have been confirmed.
We will be doing a work project in the mornings, teaching songs and games to the children in the afternoon, and spending a day or two sight-seeing at the end of the week. This is an amazing opportunity to take Glen Mhor Camp to others who cannot come here!
If you would like to donate money towards Glen Mhor's work project or the cost of the trip for the participants, please contact Beth or Travis at camp.
SYNOD
Our annual Synod will take place from Monday October 18th to Wednesday October 20th at St. Mark's Presbyterian Church in Don Mills. The camping report is scheduled for Tuesday morning. Zoic and Topaz will be there to hear all the news about the Synod's Committee on Synod Camping. We'll give you a full report in October's newsletter!
Penny Project
Hey Campers, be on the lookout in your church for the Penny Project letter. Jersey sent out a mailing this month asking all Sunday School Superintendents and children to collect their pennies from now until the end of 2004. At the end of the year, we are asking each church to roll the pennies collected and send a cheque to Glen Mhor Camp. We'd also like to hear from you about how well your Sunday School did and would love to put a photograph of your group and the pennies you collected on the website! Good luck with collecting and thanks so much for helping to make Glen Mhor an even better place for our campers!
Next Year is our 75th!
As you know, we will be celebrating our 75th anniversary in 2005 and we are very excited. Many celebrations are in the works and here are just a couple:
- A Dinner and Evening of Praise and Worship at Trinity York-Mills Presbyterian Church in Toronto on Saturday May 14th
- An Alumni Weekend at camp from September 16th to the 18th
If you know of anyone who has ever been a camper or a staff member at Glen Mhor, please ask them to get in touch. We would love to send them invitations to all our festivities.
We are also asking to borrow photographs and other memorabilia from our Alumni to place on display during our 75th Anniversary summer. For further, information, please contact Beth or Travis at camp.
What's Ahead?
Look for a report on Synod, more updates on our staff and campers, photos of Reunion, and much more in October's letter due online at the end of the month. We are excited to make this monthly newsletter more fun and interesting with each passing month. So please send us your poems, your stories, your news (school concerts, teams, Sunday school and youth group events, etc) and your photos. Let's keep our Glen Mhor community alive and thriving throughout our fall and winter months!
Blessings to you and your families,
Topaz and Zoic
