Welcome to TRIUCHAN TAIRUS - Issue #9
September 2005
CAMP THESE DAYS
Our 75 th Anniversary Summer has been a smashing success. The items for sale in the Tuck Shop were sold so quickly that a second order was placed and, with the help of the Trautrim Family, many beautiful new signs decorate the property. Our themes have been creative and fresh all summer long with the highlights so far being “The Great Canadian Adventure”, “Old McGlen Mhor Had a Farm…” and “Fly me to the Moon”. The lodge is continually decorated, the announcements are often done on an epic scale and the camp-wide games we play every evening have been entertaining, new and diverse.
All summer long we have been blessed with enthusiastic campers and stellar counselors who have made each day different. There have been paper bag princesses, treasure hunters, Jedi, zoo animals, hockey players and plenty of other interesting creatures spotted in our Courtyard. It has been a great time.
One of the new additions to the Glen Mhor programme, the Terra Jump, has also been very popular. Built and installed by Spring Free Trampoline, the Terra Jump is cousin to our famous Aqua Jump (Water Trampoline) but resides in our playing field. The trampoline features a new “spring-free” design as well as a sturdy safety net to keep our participants safe. Spring Free Trampoline was kind enough to donate this trampoline and we would like to thank them again for their generosity. We have had lots of fun.
Our last two weeks of the summer feature Adventure Camp, a two-week camp for teens that focuses on skills, teambuilding and adventure programming. Adventure Camp has a weekend-long canoe trip, belay school, kayaking instruction, rappelling lessons and much more. The 16 campers have all done very well so far and are looking forward to the canoe trip with great anticipation.

REGISTRATIONS
We would like to thank you for a great summer. This year we operated at maximum capacity nearly every week and some camps were full even before the end of April. For those of you registering next year, we recommend that you do it as soon as possible. Family Camp 2006 is already filling up and Teen Week will be a very full camp again next year. Also, the LIT programme, Pre-LIT and Sr. Canoe are likely to be very popular. The 2006 Schedule will be posted to the website in the early September. Hope to see you next year!
THE WINDOW PROJECT
Continuing our project from the spring, Glen Mhor Camp is assembling three “boxes” to aid in Youth Ministry in our Synod and throughout the Province (if not the world). This project is called “The Window Project” and we continue to create fresh, new content to fill our “Youth Group in a Box”. This is the first of three boxes that will be created and it contains all the elements necessary to plan and run a successful Youth Group. It has games, Bible Studies, snack ideas, fundraising ideas, community project and service ideas and much more. For a complete list of the contents of the Youth Group Box, please visit www.thewindowproject.com.
THE GLEN MHOR OUTDOOR CENTRE
The 6 th season of operation for the Glen Mhor Outdoor Centre was a fantastic adventure. After early concerns that work-to-rule decisions by Ontario School Boards would threaten the Outdoor Centre, we were blessed to host 4 school groups. The school kids came for three-day outdoor, experiential education programmes and left with memories of a wonderful time learning and playing at camp. Congratulations go to Natasha “Plinko” Crompton-Dunn and the Outdoor Centre Staff for a fantastic spring season.
ADOPT A CABIN
We want the Glen Mhor site to look clean and fun and creative. To that end, as the cabins start to need another coat of stain, we have taken the opportunity to stain each one a different colour. It’s time to stain the rest of our cabins. This is a great project for your Youth Group or other congregational organization (e.g. session, women’s committee). It is a time to come to camp and work together with very visible and fulfilling results. If you or your group is interested in coming to camp in May or June to work on one of our cabins or, if you are unable to come to camp but would like to donate the funds to stain a cabin, please contact Travis at camp.
THE L.I.T. PROGRAMME
This year’s Leaders In Training were put through one of two one-month programmes run by Matthew “Aloe” Henderson and Ashley “Zilch” Hawkins. Both programmes were very successful, with much potential evident in all the participants. The theme for the programme this summer was taking the path less traveled, and the LITs talked a lot about choosing their own path and how that ties into leadership.
The highlight of the L.I.T. programme in both months was a kayaking excursion around Lake of Bays and an ice cream treat.
Leaders in Training at Glen Mhor participate in a 28-day programme designed to equip them with skills to be leaders at camp, in their home churches and in their home communities. For more information about the LIT Programme, or to register for next year, please see the Glen Mhor Camp Website.
SYNOD NEWS
We are eagerly looking forward to the end of August when the Synod Camp Board’s Proposal for the Future of Camping will become public knowledge. We are very pleased with the new direction that has been proposed and are grateful to have an end in sight to all of the upheaval of the last year.
We will post a copy of the Proposal to www.glenmhorcamp.com
What can I do?
If you can help get the word out about the Synod Camp Board recommendations and to help us get them passed at Synod (the annual meeting, October 19 th, of the group of churches that owns Glen Mhor Camp), please make sure that your minister and as many people as possible read the Proposal.
CALLING ALL ALUMNI!
As our 75th anniversary year winds down, we are hoping to further develop our network of all alumni. If you know of anyone who has ever been a camper or staff member at GMC, please have them drop us a line with their name, camp name and home and email addresses.
10 Year Paddles
If you were involved in Glen Mhor Camp for 10 years or more (as a camper, staff member, committee volunteer) you are qualified for a 10 year paddle. There are currently 55 paddles up in the dining hall and one of our projects for the 75th year is to add as many paddles as possible.
Please fill in the form on the website (under the Alumni section) if you would like to have your 10 Year Paddle put up in the Dining Hall.
75th Anniversary Dinner Photos Online
If you look at the main page of the website you will find a folder with all of the photos we used for a slide show at the Anniversary Dinner in May.
