Glen Mhor Outdoor Education Centre

Teacher Comments:

Our compliments to the outstanding staff at Glen Mhor for an amazing three day adventure despite the not-so-cooperative weather. It was always evident by the smiles on our students' faces that they thoroughly enjoyed their experience. In fact, a day after our return to school I overheard a group of our students singing camp songs on the school bus! Visit our school's website to see some of our pics

The 4 S's Test

All activities at the Glen Mhor Outdoor Centre (for students, parent volunteers, teachers, and staff) are approved only after they pass the 4 S's Test.

In order to do any activity at Glen Mhor you must be able to answer yes to ALL FOUR questions:

The Basics

The Outdoor Centre is open in the Months of May and June for School Groups

Accompanying teachers and parent supervisors may reside in one of these cabins, located within close proximity to the group members' cabins, or in the camper cabins with their group.

There is a main washroom complex for both males and females which includes shower facilities. The complex is located in the main lodge building, not far from any cabin.

The Glen Mhor Outdoor Centre staff is comprised of professionals and university/college graduates or students, many of whom are a part of our Summer Camp staff team. All of our staff members attend an Outdoor Centre training week early in May (for the Spring Outdoor Centre Season) or September (for the Fall Outdoor Centre Season) and have met the appropriate swimming, first aid and programme qualifications.

We are thrilled to be able to offer a camp-style programme for schools that includes archery, arts and crafts, astronomy, canoeing, climbing wall, Creation's Quest (environmental education), fine art, initiatives, kayaking, low ropes, music and drama, dance, orienteering, outdoor living skills and zip line. Schools can pick from either six or eight activities depending on whether they come to the Outdoor Centre for three or four days.

A Teacher on Outdoor Education

Grant Linney, a teacher with the Norval Outdoor Centre, had a great piece in the Globe and Mail in 2006 where he talked about the value of Outdoor Education.

You can find Grant's OpEd article, "Why Are We Avoiding What We Must Embrace" here. Why not print it off and post it in your Staff Room?
